Asus Zenbook UX32VD Ultrabook Review

The Asus Zenbook UX32VD opens a new chapter for an outdoor mobile computer development. The ultrabook is comes with light and elegant housing and equipped with non reflective IPS display for optimum outdoor use.

Externally, the Asus Zenbook UX32VD is not different than the Zenbook UX31 or Zenbook Prime UX31A. Only the details you can see slight modification to the shape of the base unit. The housing is mae of combination between aluminum and plastic materials. The housing feels strong and sturdy but different than the UX31.

A look at the data sheet will provide an additional marginal difference in the dimensions and weight. Asus UX31 is slightly thinner than the UX32VD. Also the weight is slightly higher than the UX31.

The Equipment of Asus Zenbook UX32VD

A total of three USB 3.0 ports, an SD card reader, a full-size HDMI and a mini-VGA port are integrated on Asus Zenbook UX32VD. On the right side you can find an adapter - even mini-VGA to VGA standard and a USB-RJ45 (LAN) adapter. An audio combo port is provided on the right side as well.

In terms of communication, the Asus Zenbook UX32VD sports LAN in 10/100 Mbps standard wireless LAN with 802.11 a / b / g / n and Bluetooth 4.0 (wireless combo card). Built into the display, we find a 720p HD webcam. The offered image quality is consistently fine, even in low ambient light, the noise has very limited.

Asus Zenbook UX32VD’s Input Devices

Asus speaks here of "improvements" that we see at a glance in the form of the now built-in keyboard illumination. Especially in darkened rooms (aircraft) that facilitates can be very useful. The integrated ambient light sensor automatically adjusts to the desired level of illumination.

The typing feel is similar to the UX31, but it shows over almost the entire keyboard across a clear spring-back in a little more pressure. The unibody chassis UX31 series holds the keyboard in significantly stronger position than the sandwich construction for the UX32 Series.

The multi-touch-enabled mouse replacement is 10.5 x 7 centimeters and comparatively large touch-sensitive over the entire area. In the lower part of which is indicated by a mark of the print area for left-and right-click, the area also is available for navigation, as no separate keys are constructed.

Display

The Asus Zenbook UX32VD‘s display delivers high brightness, excellent image contrast, matte display surface, high resolution for good visibility, and good viewing angles.

Asus equips the Zenbook UX32 with a conventional high-definition display (1366x768 pixels) and also a full HD (1920x1080) IPS panel. In terms Brightness test we measured a maximum value of positive 388 cd / m². This is somewhat less than the maximum of 470 cd / m² in the UX31.

On average, the display is still worth seeing with 355 cd / m², the illumination is of 88% given the high background brightness more than okay.

Full-HD in a 13-inch laptop sounds very tempting, but could be linked to problems involving display size. With 166 dpi (dots per inch) pixel density, the display can reproduce much greater detail than about the HD variant (118 dpi).

Thanks to its high brightness and matte display surface, interfering reflections are reduced to a minimum in the open environments and the displayed image remains readable even in direct sunlight.

The use of IPS technology (In Plane Switching) screen also allows the extreme angles from all sides without any significant change in the displayed image. Also a variety of current Tablet PCs set up with this solution.

The Performance of Asus Zenbook UX32VD

The Asus Zenbook UX32VD sports Intel’s i7-3517UM ULV processor. Fortunately, Asus provides the Zenbook UX32VD with a dedicated graphics solution. The GeForce GT 620M from Nvidia is activated automatically by Optimus.

Besides the dedicated GeForce graphics the user of Zenbook UX32VD also has an HD Graphics 4000.

What about the actual value of the built-in Nvidia GeForce GT 620M in gaming use? We compare the integrated HD 4000 with the dedicated graphics solution from Nvidia using the latest Diablo 3.

While the HD 4000 even at medium detail level falls below 30 fps and Diablo can be played only limited, the GT 620M provides that up to high detail settings.

Noise and Temperature

While in low-load Office (web surfing, text, ...), the Asus Zenbook remains silent, the Asus Zenbook UX32VD is louder under load.

In numbers we are talking about 28-30.2 dB (A) for office use and up to 39.3-44.6 dB (A) under load.

Without significant load in office use, we measure up to 34 ° C at the top of the base unit to the rear. As usual, we call our test model in the stress test to the utmost and put the CPU and GPU for more than an hour at full load. In consequence not only the fan is significantly audibly, also eliminated by touching of the surfaces, it always changes to feel well. We measure the Hotspots but times a in the rear range in which both the components are obstructed than also the cooling system together with exhaust air openings. With average highs around up to 50.4 ° C at the Upper-and underside, the UX32VD reaches here already graver values.

In practical use, the surface temperatures should still remain much lower, as a utilization of CPU and GPU, even for complex applications such as video editing and gaming, if it occurs only over very short periods of time. After more than an hour Anno 2070, the surface temperatures were slightly below those in the stress test at a maximum of around 47 ° C in the range of the exhaust vents.

As a result of our stress tests as an extreme scenario, we could observe a throttling of the CPU. CPU and GPU within easy reach over 90 ° C core temperature after which the CPU clock to reduce its approximately 800 MHz to the temperatures went down slightly again.

In everyday practice, we found no restrictions. Under load the CPU overclocked to specifications up to the maximum turbo clock.

Speaker

With Bang & Olufsen ICEpower the Asus Zenbook UX32VD provides the finest audio enjoyment. At full volume, the Asus laptop provides consistently good sound that can even hint at some abundance.

Energy consumption and Battery Life

The included AC adapter is nice small, a closer look at the specifications, however, shows an output power of 65 watts.

Under favorable conditions, ie without load with display dimmed, disabled wireless modules and active energy saving profile, the Asus Zenbook UX32VD comes out with only 6.1W. Maximum display brightness and power profile "Balanced" raise the energy demand on 10.6W. With active wireless modules and keypad in idle mode, we can observe a maximum of 13.1W.

With battery, a maximum for a period of around 7 hours can be expected. This is what we measure in the Battery Eater Reader's test with minimum display brightness, disabled wireless modules in the Power Saver profile.

Is the flipside of the coin represents the Classic test in which a 3D image is rendered with the help of the dedicated GPU. At maximum brightness, active radio modules in the high performance profile, we measured 161 minutes, or about 2.5 hours.

Conclusion on Asus Zenbook UX32VD Review

The most important feature of Asus Zenbook UX32VD is the display Full-HD, matte, 355 Candela, on average, over 1000:1 contrast and great viewing angles due to IPS technology.

In terms of performance, Intel's new processor generation (Ivy Bridge) provides more power under the hood of the UX32VD. In addition, the integrated Ultra Geforce GT 620M with a dedicated GPU, although this is an entry-level GPU, it can be used for computationally intensive applications on the 96 cores of graphics card.

Which of the new Asus Zenbooks is now right for you is depend on your individual needs and the desired price point. A sleek unibody chassis can be found in Zenbook Prime UX31A, as SSD and FHD IPS, but "only" with integrated graphics solution. The Asus Zenbook UX32VD acting under its power for a little more on the graphics side, but waived in exchange for the precious chassis and is limited to an SSD cache.
